Information Structure is the organisation of information and ideas into stages within each sentence. This staging helps them connect clearly with the information and ideas in previous and later sentences in the paragraph.
Choosing appropriate Information Structure, that is, staging the information for each sentence in your paragraph is important in writing clearly. It helps to produce a clear flow of ideas through all the sentences of the paragraph, and helps to maintain the focus of the paragraph.
After you finish this unit, you will be able to:
- recognise how information can be organised and staged in a sentence in different ways.
- recognise how clear Information Structure in each sentence contributes directly to clear Paragraph Structure.
- organise information in your own sentences to produce cohesive, clear, logical paragraphs.
